Yellowjacket Teams See Success in Their Late Season Matches

The winter sports season at Avondale High School has reached its conclusion, and some late season success has been had.  The final two weeks of the season were filled with difficult practices, rigorous preparation, and the striving towards district, regional, and state championship titles.  Outlined here is a recap of the season, final results, and important notes regarding each of the Avondale winter athletic teams:

Varsity Competitive Cheer

Titles Won: Four first place tournament finishes

Final Season Results: Finished in ninth place at the D2 State Regional Finals after qualifying for only the fifth time in school history

Notes: Led by a group of nine seniors, the Avondale Varsity Competitive Cheer team had a historic season.  Winning four tournaments throughout the year and numerous matches against league opponents, the girls also broke their own record for routine score three times this season.  Setting various school marks, this competitive cheer team has cemented itself in Avondale athletic history.

Varsity Bowling

Season Record: 6-8

Final Season Results: Did not qualify for state tournament

Notes: Of note is sophomore bowler Eugene Myers bowled multiple 300 games throughout the season and a 290 game in the OAA league championship, allowing him to take the OAA Blue League Boys High Game title.

Varsity Skiing

Titles Won: No first place tournament finishes

Final Season Results: Did not qualify for state tournament

Varsity Hockey

Season Record: 13-9-2

Final Season Results: Lost in second round of district tournament

Notes: Oxford-Avondale-Notre Dame Preparatory Academy United Varsity Hockey Team banded together during the season following the Oxford High School school shooting, only losing four games the remainder of the season.  Avondale athletes Brian Budde (senior captain), Garrett Brinker (junior), and Alex Palombit (junior) all played vital roles on the team.

Varsity Boys Swim and Dive

Season Record: 4-12

Final Season Results: Did not qualify for regional tournament

Varsity Girls Basketball

Season Record: 10-11

Final Season Results: Lost in second round of district tournament to Waterford Kettering High School

Notes: Coach Roy Christmon led the Varsity Girls Basketball Team to a successful season with a disappointing finish.  After a difficult start, the girls found their stride, winning six straight during a period between January and February.  Senior captains Savannah Schmidt and Raigan Lawrence led the team to a district win against Pontiac High School before the team lost to Waterford Kettering in the succeeding game.  A highlight of the season was when Raigan Lawrence scored her 1,000th career point against Harper Woods High School on February 16th. 

Boys Basketball

Freshmen Season Record: 6-11

Junior Varsity Season Record: 14-5

Varsity Season Record: 9-12

Final Season Results: Lost in district championship game against Clarkston High School

Notes: The Avondale Varsity Basketball Team had a solid regular season followed by a blowout win against Waterford Kettering High School in the district semi-final.  Although their run was cut short by Clarkston, the team, led by seniors Marshall Dennis and Anthony Harris and junior Denzel White, had a very successful season overall.  Of note is the JV team’s nine game winning streak at one point during the season and their 14-5 overall record, showcasing the bright future Avondale basketball has.

All in all, the Avondale winter athletic teams have had very successful seasons with large amounts of success.  Seniors with known college interest and commitment includes Raigan Lawrence (girls basketball), Savannah Schmidt (girls basketball), Marshall Dennis (boys basketball), and Anthony Harris (boys basketball).  Congratulations to each of these individuals!

The spring athletic season is commencing and looking for athletes of all skill levels and abilities for the following sports: track and field, girls tennis, girls soccer, boys lacrosse, boys volleyball, softball, and baseball.
