Ramadan Mubarak!

As many know, Ramadan is the month in which Muslims fast for 30 days from sunrise until sunset, but there’s more to Ramadan than no water or food all day long.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam; it was in this month the Quran (The holy book of Islam) was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Therefore, reciting the Quran during the month of Ramadan is the most important part and should be the first thing Muslims prioritize; it places above fasting. A fasting Muslim should refrain from anger, gossiping, and a variety of other things apart from food and water. They should deeply reflect on their deen (belief and way that Muslims live their lives according to the teachings of Islam) and their connection to Allah.

Here’s what some of our students that attend Avondale High School have to say about this blessed month:

Umair Dewan (Senior) “As a Muslim living in the luxurious country of America, Ramadan is a very important month because by restraining ourselves from the blessings so easily available to us, we naturally develop empathy for those who are less fortunate. It is a special type of worship that nourishes the soul with a unique sense of peace and fulfillment.”

Jariatu Bangurah (Junior) “A lot of people look at Ramadan as just a time to ‘starve themselves.’ I believe Ramadan is a time to get closer to Allah, to be thankful and to give, and to learn more about the religion of Islam. I’m excited for Ramadan this year, it’s always the most peaceful time of the year for me and a time to learn new surahs every day.”

Faaris Shuttari (Junior) “Ramadan is not just a month of fasting and prayer, but a journey of self-discipline to purify our hearts, strengthen our faith to cultivate a deeper connection with our Creator”

After 29-30 days of fasting, the Islamic holiday Eid al Fitr takes place and it translates to “the Festival of the breaking of the fast.” Muslims will wake up early and get ready to pray Eid prayers at the mosque!
