MIST Detroit 2023

MIST or Muslim Interscholastic Tournament is a fun, educational, and collaborative series of events, competitions, and workshops all in one program.

MIST’s main focus is High School Muslim students and its purpose is to bring them together and provide a platform for them to develop confidence, professionalism, and leadership skills through public speaking, practicing presentation skills, and presenting their creativity all in order to solidify a strong identity.

Some of the events that help achieve this purpose are MIST Quiz Bowls, debates, Quran recitations or knowledge tests, and even oratory speeches given on the spot.

MIST took place at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor this year and some of our students from the MSA (Muslim Student Association) attended on the 11th & 12th of March. It was a busy weekend for Muslims from all over Michigan in Ann Arbor!

Zaara Sultan, a sophomore here at AHS who also placed first in her Digital art competition, states: “It’s super fun, highly recommend doing multiple events, EXPLORE THE CAMPUS!!! THERE’S SO MUCH!! What stood out to me was the school spirit of some schools and how loud their cheering was, the award ceremony was the best part, will definitely be participating next year!!”

Another student who attended MIST from Avondale High School has something to say about the MIST experience.

Umair Mustafa Dewan, a senior here at AHS says “I highly recommend everyone to take part in MIST, there are so many opportunities to collaborate and compete, develop creative skills, and learn from professionals while educating them about Islam and Muslims”

Participation in next year’s MIST is highly encouraged by any Muslim students that attend Avondale High School!
